サラワクのスポーツ史において、1997年は特別な年として記憶されている。 サッカーのサラワクFAがリーグ優勝に沸いたその裏で、ラグビー界でもまた、一つの「偉業」が達成されていた。名門 Kuching Rugby Football Club (KRFC) が州大会を制覇し、その勢いのまま「Agong Cup（全国州対抗戦）」へ、チームの主力を送り込んだのだ。
この「黄金期」を支えたのは、国境を超えた二人のキーマンと、それに呼応した地元の若者たちだった。
一人は、ニュージーランドから来た大型センター、Barry（バリー）。 州のインフラ整備という重責を担う傍ら、チームに合流した彼は、かつてオールブラックスの候補（Trialist）にも選ばれた本物の実力者だった。彼がグラウンドで伝授した「ハカ（Haka）」の魂と、世界基準の戦術は、チームに強烈な闘争心を植え付けた。
そしてもう一人は、日本の商社マンとしてクチンに駐在していたToshi（トシ）。 多忙な激務の合間を縫ってSong Kheng Haiグラウンドに駆けつけ、誰よりもひたむきに身体を張り続けた。彼の規律とフィットネス、そしてチームを鼓舞する姿勢は、まさに「サムライ」の精神をチームにもたらした。
バリーの突破力とトシの献身性。この二人の外国人選手（Expats）が核となり、Speedy GonzalesことLawrence Tanら地元の俊英たちが融合した1997年のKRFC。 彼らがAgong Cupという最高の舞台で、サラワクの誇りを胸に戦ったあの日々は、単なる試合結果以上の「レガシー」として、今もクラブの歴史に輝いている。
Reflecting on the Glory Days of 1997
1997 was a monumental year for Kuching Rugby Football Club. Not only did we dominate the local league, but we also formed the core of the Sarawak State Team for the prestigious Agong Cup.
It was a time when international experience met local talent perfectly. I, Toshi (from Japan), and Barry (our NZ center and former All Blacks trialist) were proud to stand alongside the talented local boys of Kuching.
I still remember how Barry taught us the “Haka” and brought that professional intensity to our game, while I tried to bring the Japanese discipline and spirit to the field. Working as a trader by day and tackling hard at Song Kheng Hai by evening—those were the best days.
To all my brothers who played with us in that golden era: Thank you for the memories. We made history together.
